Introduction : As per Medical Council of India medical education programme is designed with a goal to create an “Indian Medical Graduate” possessing requisite knowledge, skills, attitudes, values and Responsiveness, so that he or she may function appropriately and effectively as a physician of First contact of the community while being globally relevant.

Concurrent with above goal Institute & Department have identified three pillars to conceptualize the IMG into Reality. These three pillars are viz. Service, Education and Research. .

Service :
The Department implements community-based programs to enhance health care services to rural communities. It has adopted RHTC Tokapal and UHTC- Rajendra Nagar Ward .

Education :
The Department strives to provide best learning opportunities to medical students through community-based medical education. Through the community based education students learn about rural/ tribal life, environmental sanitation, socio-economic conditions and health problems of the community.

Achievement & Research : In the departmental posting students are made acquainted with research methodology and data analysis methods. After this the students and groups of students undertake improvement projects concerned with sanitation, drinking water, nutrition, immunization etc.

We have developed excellent partnership with the District Health System to whom we provide technical support for training and implementation of community-based programs.

Project/Research work done by 06th & 07th Semester students in groups.

Library :There are 285 different books available in the departmental Library.

Clinical Classes - Syllabus

III rd Semester : - (1 month = 90 hrs.)
1 Health Education, Skill planning, Implementation and Evaluation of field area.
2 Conduction of Community & Hospital based related projects.

VI th Semester : - (1 month = 90 hrs.)
1 Family health management by allocating families to medical students.
2 Practice of Primary health area in field area.

VII th Semester : - (1 month = 90 hrs.)
1 Use of Epidemiological methods, Investigation of Epidemics.
2 Exposure to Health Care Delivery System.


Community Health Services :
1. Settings for Community Oriented Health Services

1.1 Decentralized Health Care Delivery Through Rural And Urban Health Training Centers
A) Rural Health Program

The Rural health program of the centre is also known as the Comprehensive Rural Health Care services. Rural Health Training Centre is situated at Tokapal, 10 km away from the Late BRKM, Govt Medical College, Dimrapal. The field practice area is infact tribal dominated part of the Chhattisgarh State. Nearly 70% of the population in this area belongs to tribal community.

A 30 bed hospital with 24 hr emergency and obstetric facilities :- The hospital also provides outpatient services in medicine, surgery, paediatrics, gynaecology & obstetrics, eye, NCD clinic, ANC clinic, immunization clinic. Traditional system of medicine is also promoted at the center through dedicated Ayurveda Clinic. The Services are well supported by basic laboratory, serological, microscopy and radiological services.

Field Practice Area (FPA): The FPA provides health care services to a population of over 77,453. Both facility based and domiciliary preventive, promotive and curative services are provided to the rural population covered by the FPA.

B) Urban Health Program
The Urban health program of the Centre provides community based health services to marginalised population of. Urban Health Centre is situated at 5 km away from the College. Preventive, promotive and curative health services along with basic laboratory services are provided to the population covered by the Urban health program.

1.2. Partnership With District Health System
Over the years, our department has built a strong relationship with the District Health System through the RHTCs & UHTC. It not only supports delivery of routine health care services to the community, but also organizes training of frontline workers and supports capacity building for better implementation of national health programs. On request of the district health system, it has provided support for investigation and control of epidemics.

1.3 Partnership With UNICEF
Department of Community Medicine is actively involved in providing training to the health workers from every corner of the Bastar District. Till now since the inception of training programme in 2011. Department in collaboration with UNICEF has successfully conducted 13 trainings till date. Training was imparted to the Medical officers, ANM of DHS, AWW workers from Abujamd area of Narayanpur District and health workers from SATHI Samaj Seva Sanstha.And involved in strengthening and detection of Anaemia.

1.4 School Health Education Programme
School going children are at the most receptive age, and this has been utilized by many community programmes for infusing new ideas into the community. Children can be utilized to disseminate health education messages to families and neighborhoods to change the attitudes and traditional practices of the community.

1.5 Internship Training
Interns are posted in the department for two months out of their 12 months internship period. During this period they are posted at General OPD, RHTC Tokapal and Urban Health Centre, Rajendra Nagar Ward ,DOT center ART Center ,Rabies Clinic, Leprosy Center,NHM The setting at Late BRKM Government Medical College provides them with an opportunity not only to learn management of illnesses at individual level, but also learn organization and functioning of Primary Health Centre & various National Health Programmes.

Biochemistry

The Department of Biochemistry is engaged in high quality teaching facilities with eminent faculties that makes the medical undergraduate students compatible with all latest scientific developments.

This department also provides patient care by investigating biochemical tests in the clinical laboratory with modern updated instruments operated by trained & skilled personnel.

Obstetrics & Gynecology

Department of Obstetrics & Gynecology started in year 2006. It is a MCI recognized 60 bedded department.

The department provides comprehensive health care to women through daily OPD, special clinics like cancer clinic, antenatal clinic, post natal clinic, adolescent health clinic and 24 hours emergency obstetric care.

Facilities

Antenatal clinic daily, high risk pregnancy care, Post natal clinic & family welfare, Ante partum surveillance by ultrasound & non stress test.

Achievement

Faculties of the department are regularly participating in national & State government programmes organized by government & NHRM for in service doctors, RMA, AMO & Staff nurse.

Equipment

Well equipped labour room, Obstetrics & Gynecological OT, Colour Doppler sonography & portable sonography machine.

DNB courses in obs & Gynecology. Which started in Jan year 2012. Our institute is accreditated for 03 primary and 03 secondary candidates every year in Jan session.

Pathology

Department of Pathology Late Baliram Kashyap Memorial Govt. Medical College, Jagdalpur established in year 2007.

We have undergrduate teaching course in MBBS and Certificate course for Laboratory Technician. Besides this, facility for laboratory service for both indoor and outdoor patients available.

Regarding Lab service we have different sections like Histopathology, Cytology , Hematology and Blood Bank .
